My XYL suggested moving to an upscale neighborhood that has antenna restrictions. Whereas the 80 Meter filter uses a Cohn type tuned network. So Ok, yesterday I determined that some evil external force was de-sensing the front end of my new rebuilt transceiver. But the wild goose chase was invaluable as I had a real chance to dig into what I had done some 35 years ago where the documentation of what had been done got lost in one of the 10 moves I made in that 35 years. I even rebuilt the active mixer --so all is not lost. My detailed recent journey did affirm I knew what end of the soldering iron was hot --even 35 years ago.

In anticipation of a need for speech operation, I decided I would design a speech modulator for the already built LF Power Amplifier. With the limited band space available in a band in this part of the radio spectrum, a single sideband SSB system seemed preferable to the wider bandwidth AM system. So this is what I have built and what I am about to describe.
However this might have put some limitations on the utility of the LF equipment for use at a unique site away from the amateur station and I decided to build a stand alone modulator which could connect into the LF transmitter. These days, most SSB transmitters use the filter method where double sideband is produced with carrier balanced out and one sideband rejected by feeding the other through a steep skirted bandpass filter.
The filter is fixed in frequency and frequency transmitted is derived by a heterodyne process. The filter is normally centred in the HF region and the usual amateur method to make such a filter is to use a ladder network with quartz crystals of the same frequency.
For application with the LF transmitter, the fixed frequency SSB signal, could be heterodyned down to the required low frequency. An alternative method of producing a single sideband is the phasing system.
For this system, there are two modulators which balance out the carrier signal fed to them. The carrier to one is fed 90 degrees out of phase to the other. Audio signal generated by speech is fed to both modulators, the signal fed to one being 90 degrees out of phase with the other over the whole speech frequency range.
Balancing out of one sideband using this system can be illustrated with the aid of vector diagrams. A description making use of these diagrams, as given in the RSGB Radio Communication Handbook, is included in an appendix at the end of this article.Hp z220 specs pdf
One feature of the phasing system is that it can be made to operate over a wide range of frequencies without any tuned circuits, selective frequency circuits or heterodyning.
For the LF transmitter, this system provided some attraction as the whole process could be done at the LF baseband and cover the whole transmitter frequency range of to kHz without any selective frequency elements. After building a number of HF Amateur radio rigs, including a several 7! Picastars, I was looking for a new project to use some crystal filters found on eBay that were given to me. Not much else of value. Click on most pictures for larger view.
What started this build, some SSB crystal filters available on eBay. I am not a member of the RSGB, so I am unsure if Eamon still does the column, but the book appears to be a compilation of those ideas that do not appear on his own web pages.
Eamon used axial components, without any PCB's. This is a partial picture of the front cover. ISBN: 3 I have no personal or commercial connection to the book or author, except for its purchase.
The book is not very expensive and a great read, even if just for some ideas. I imagine it's available via the RSGB or in some countries, from technical book sellers. My project relies heavily on Eamon's book but with some changes to suit parts at hand and also in some cases, to make the modules 50ohms in and out.
All PCB designs are either 50x50mm or 50xmm in size. But, I will show the modules I have built so far in the project.
All modules were drawn up in Schematic form, then a PCB design made for them. So far I have made enough modules to get the Receiver running. The transmit modules have mostly been built. In this chapter though is the Balanced modulator. I built the diode version and also an LM version to compare. I like the diode version better as less parts and I think better carrier supression. A mixer has three ports: F1 receives low level signal; F2 is high level signal local oscillator and F3 is the resultant mixer product. There are three types of mixers: single-ended, single balanced and double balanced.
Double Balanced Mixer provides superior suppression of the local oscillator and RF signals in the output leaving only the sum and difference frequencies. This is known as port to port isolation. MC is an active double balanced mixer made from bipolar silicon transistors formed into Gilbert transconductance cell. MC is available in pin DIP package. Brief descriptions of various pins are given below.

Pin 2 and pin 3 determines gain of the mixer. The gain will be maximum when pin 2 and pin 3 are shorted. Gain can be adjusted by connecting some resistance between pin 2 and pin 3. Pin 7, pin 9, pin 11 and pin 13 are not used. DC Voltage measured at various pins of MC given below. There may be slight variation in these voltages due to accuracy of measuring equipment or components used.

The circuit uses two numbers of MC First MC functions as receiver mixer cum balanced modulator. Second MC works as product detector cum transmit mixer. It can be modified for other bands by suitably changing VFO, transmit band pass filter and receiver band pass filter. I had avoided CW and AM provision for simplicity.
